The IAP, Allahabad branch organized a CME on Pediatric Neurology, on the 13th of April, Saturday, at Hotel Grand Continental, Allahabad. Dr Praveen Kumar, Pediatric Neurologist from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi gave a lecture on “Management of Pediatric Epilepsy – basic and current”. This was followed by a vibrant, interactive question & Answer session covering several other topics from Pediatric Neurology.
Dr Praveen Kumar emphasized on the fact that Epilepsy is more common in children than adults and that it is a Neurological disorder and not a curse. He said that multiple causes including central nervous system infection, structural brain malformations, genetic and metabolic defects are responsible for epilepsy in children. A thorough evaluation is required for finding the cause as well as identifying non epileptic events. Almost 60 – 70% of epileptic children remain seizure free on medications. Newer therapies like genetic defect based selection of drugs, diet modification with high fat diet, surgery etc are also very helpful and with proper management most children with epilepsy can lead a healthy life.
