CME on Pediatric Dermatology-Allahabad branch

Greetings from Allahabad!

The IAP Allahabad branch organized a CME on Pediatric Dermatology – skin disease in children, on the 29th of June, Saturday, at Hotel Ravisha, Allahabad. Skin problems are very common in children and especially in this season. The monsoons brings with its wake a multitude of skin eruptions and ailments in children. Dr Sushil Kumar is a well known skin specialist and Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Moti Lal Nehru Medical College and SRN Hospital, Allahabad and has worked in the Indian Army for 5 years. He delivered a talk on the common skin problems in children.

The focus of this CME was “Atopic Dermatitis”. Dr Sushil Kumar emphasized on the fact that Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic relapsing inflammation of skin characterized by xerosis and intense pruritus. Distribution and presentation of lesions varies at different ages and can be of infantile, childhood and adulthood forms. Infants have a predominantly facial and extensor involvement whereas localization to flexures increases in prevalence with age. The disease is often associated with personal or family history of atopy. Genetic basis (eg FLG mutation) with variable expression influenced by environmental factors. IgE elevation and eosinophilia are a common occurrence. Th2 dominated response is seen in acute lesions which evolves predominance of IFN-gamma producing T cells in chronic lesions.IgE mediated T cell reactivity to self-proteins, allergens, infectious antigens, super antigens and other irritants is the basic immune-aberration. Emollients are the mainstay of the treatment. Oral antihistamines, topical corticosteroids and immuno-modulators induces good clinical response. While severe disease requires oral corticosteroids and other immunosuppressants.

The very insightful and elaborative talk was followed by a lively interactive session. The CME also featured the distribution of the second issue of the Newsletter of IAP Allahabad – Pediaworld. The event was presided by Dr P. Murthy and conducted by Dr Shubha Malaviya, Treasurer IAP Allahabad and Dr. Ishita Banerji, Secretary.

The event was attended by Pediatricians of the city in large numbers. Looking forward to report more such successful events and initiatives.

Regards.
